1. Frost
Bite: this disease is normally caught at high attitude and low
temperature. It affects the parts of body not close to heart i.e
fingers etc. Having the affected parts turned bluish or
yellowish and numb are some of its symptoms. The affected body
parts must be washed repeatedly with water upto 40C hot and
immediate arrangement should be made to bring the patient to
lower altitude.
2. Altitude
Sickness: The amount of oxygen at higher altitude gets thinner
and lungs have to work harder to suck oxygen in. This results in
headache, gasping and higher body temperature. The patients
should be immediately brought to lower altitude and medicated
with Asprin or Paracetamol.
3. Snow
Blindness: Trekkers/ Mountaineers venturing in the snow can be
hit by snow-blindness. The disease is caused by looking at snow
while walking in it for long time. The use of goggles is highly
recommended during such expeditions.
4. Dehydration:
Head and lifting heavy luggage may cause dehydration. A minimum
of 4 Liters of water/soft drinks must be consumed per day. In
case of dehydration ORS is the recommended treatment.
Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS): Acute Mountain
Sickness is experienced move frequently in mountaineering than
trekking. Those with respiratory problems should start taking
Tab. Diamox (after consulting the doctor). |
